Choosing a domain name for your business
By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read
Short, memorable, easy to spell and consistent with your brand — and registered in your organisation's name.
Your domain name appears on your website, email addresses, business cards and vehicles. It is worth choosing carefully.
Keep it short and clear
Short names are easier to type and remember. Avoid hyphens and numbers that people mishear when you say the name aloud.
Match your brand
Use your business name, or a close variation customers will recognise.
Check before committing
Search for existing trademarks and similar names that could confuse customers.
Register variations
Consider registering common misspellings and other extensions to protect your brand.
Own it properly
Register the domain in the organisation's name, with a contact address the organisation controls — not a former employee's personal email.
Search for a domain on MavenHost (opens in a new tab), or ask us to help you choose.
