Earthing and bonding for IT installations
By David Otieno, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Proper earthing protects people and equipment and lets surge protection work. It is easy to overlook and hard to fix later.
Earthing is the foundation of electrical safety and equipment protection.
Why it matters
Earthing provides a safe path for fault currents and surges, protecting people and equipment.
IT considerations
Racks, cable trays and equipment should be bonded to a common earth. Poor earthing can cause network errors and equipment damage.
Test it
Qualified electricians should test earth resistance and continuity.
Between buildings
Different earth potentials between buildings can damage copper links; use fibre between buildings.
Include earthing in design and handover
Specify earthing and bonding requirements in the design, have them tested by a qualified electrician during installation, and include the test results in the handover documents. Retest after major electrical changes.
