Email newsletters that reach the inbox
By Inara Crest Engineering 1 min read
Authentication, consent, list hygiene and a simple unsubscribe are what keep bulk email out of spam folders.
Sending a newsletter is easy. Getting it delivered to the inbox, consistently, takes a few deliberate steps.
1. Authenticate your domain
Publish SPF and DKIM records for the service that sends your newsletters, and a DMARC policy for the domain. Unauthenticated bulk mail is increasingly filtered or rejected.
2. Send from a sensible address
Use an address on your own domain that people recognise. Many organisations send bulk mail from a sub-domain such as news.example.co.ke so that marketing reputation stays separate from day-to-day mail.
3. Only email people who agreed
Never buy lists. Use confirmed sign-ups, record when consent was given, and honour the Data Protection Act, 2019.
4. Make unsubscribing easy
Include a clear unsubscribe link in every message and process requests promptly. A recipient who cannot unsubscribe will mark you as spam instead, which hurts every future send.
5. Keep the list clean
- Remove addresses that bounce permanently.
- Re-confirm or remove subscribers who have not opened anything for a long period.
- Watch complaint rates after each campaign.
6. Design for phones
Use a single column, readable text sizes and a clear call to action. Many recipients will read on a phone.
