Fire suppression for server rooms explained
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Early detection and clean-agent suppression protect equipment better than water — but design, sealing and safety matter.
A fire in a server room can destroy equipment and data. Protection combines detection and suppression designed for the space.
Early detection
Aspirating smoke detection samples air continuously and detects smoke at very early stages, before a fire develops.
Clean-agent suppression
Gas-based systems extinguish fires without water or residue, protecting equipment. They require a sealed room so the gas concentration holds.
Coordination
Suppression systems should integrate with the building fire alarm, shut down air handling where required and provide warnings before discharge.
Safety
Staff must know the alarms and evacuation procedures. Follow local fire codes and qualified designers' advice.
Maintenance
Systems need regular inspection and testing by qualified technicians.
