Guest Wi-Fi and hotspots for hotels and venues
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Guests judge a hotel or venue by its Wi-Fi. Separate it from your operations, design for peak occupancy and make access simple.
For hotels, guest houses, restaurants and event venues, Wi-Fi is part of the service. It also has to be kept apart from the systems that run the business.
Separate guests from operations
Guest Wi-Fi should be its own network with internet access only. Reception computers, payment terminals, the property management system and CCTV belong on separate, protected segments.
Design for peak occupancy
A full conference or a busy evening means many devices at once. Plan access points by the number of people in each area, not just by floor area, and wire them back to the network.
Make access simple and fair
- A captive portal, voucher or hotspot package with clear terms.
- Bandwidth limits per device so one guest cannot slow down everyone else.
- Clear instructions at check-in or on tables.
Monitor and support
Watch usage and problem areas, and give staff a simple way to report issues. A failing access point in the conference hall needs fixing before the next event.
Respect privacy and the law
If you collect guest details for access, keep them only as long as needed and protect them in line with the Data Protection Act, 2019.
