BlogConnectivity
Internet for multi-tenant buildings
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Shared infrastructure, separate tenant networks and clear responsibilities make connectivity in apartments and office blocks work.
Apartment blocks, office buildings and serviced apartments need to provide connectivity to many separate occupants. Planning it into the building saves tenants and owners a lot of trouble.
Shared backbone
Run fibre or structured cabling from a main communications room through risers to every unit. This lets one or more providers serve tenants without new cabling each time someone moves in.
Separate tenant networks
Each tenant needs an isolated network so neighbours cannot see each other's devices. This can be achieved with separate connections or properly configured network segmentation.
Plan rooms and risers
Allow space, power, ventilation and security in the main room and on each floor.
Common areas
Lobbies, gyms and meeting rooms need managed Wi-Fi of their own.
Clear responsibilities
Agree who maintains building infrastructure, who supports tenants and how faults are reported and fixed.
Building systems
Keep CCTV, access control and building management on networks separate from tenants.
