IT asset lifecycle management
By David Otieno, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Plan, buy, deploy, maintain, replace and dispose — managing each stage controls cost, risk and surprises.
Every computer, switch and server goes through the same lifecycle. Organisations that manage it deliberately spend less and suffer fewer surprises than those that react to failures.
Plan
Define standard models for each role and a replacement cycle for each device type. Budget for replacements before they are needed.
Acquire
Buy against the standards, with warranties that match the planned life. Record each device as it arrives.
Deploy
Configure devices consistently — security, applications, backups — and record who has them.
Maintain
Apply updates, track repairs and keep warranty information to hand. Repeated repairs signal it is time to replace.
Replace
Replace equipment before it stops receiving security updates or becomes unreliable, ideally in planned batches rather than one emergency at a time.
Dispose
Wipe or destroy storage, recycle through licensed handlers and update records.
Keep one register
A single asset register, kept current, makes every stage easier — from support calls to insurance claims to budgeting.
