Mobile device management for company phones
By David Otieno, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Configure, secure and wipe company phones and tablets centrally — without intruding on personal use.
Phones and tablets now hold company email, documents, chats and access to business systems. Losing one can mean losing data. Mobile device management (MDM) puts these devices under the same control as laptops.
What MDM does
- Enforces a screen lock, encryption and up-to-date software.
- Configures email, Wi-Fi and VPN automatically.
- Installs and updates required business apps.
- Locates, locks or wipes a lost device remotely.
Company-owned and personal devices
On company-owned devices, MDM can manage the whole phone. For personal devices used for work, use work profiles or app-level management so the organisation controls only work data and apps — not personal photos or messages. Explain clearly what is and is not visible.
Enrolment
Enrol devices as part of onboarding, before they receive company data, and remove them during offboarding.
Policies by role
Field staff, executives and shared devices may need different settings.
Respond quickly to losses
Make it easy for staff to report a lost phone immediately, and wipe company data the same day.
