New computer setup checklist
By Inara Crest Engineering 1 min read
Every step from unboxing to handover, so new computers are consistent, secure and ready to use on day one.
A consistent setup means fewer support calls and fewer security gaps. Use this checklist for every new computer.
1. Record the device
Add model, serial number and assigned user to the asset register.
2. Update
Install all operating system, driver and firmware updates.
3. Secure
- Enable full-disk encryption and store recovery keys securely.
- Install and verify endpoint protection.
- Enable the firewall.
- Use a standard user account for daily work.
4. Install standard applications
Office tools, browser, PDF reader, communication tools and any role-specific software — all from approved sources.
5. Configure
Email, shared drives, printers, Wi-Fi and VPN.
6. Enrol in management and backup
So the device receives updates and its data is protected.
7. Hand over
Show the user how to get support, sign in with MFA and where to save files.
