Personalising bulk messages without breaking privacy
By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read
Names and relevant details improve engagement; sensitive details in a message preview can harm people. Personalise carefully.
Personalised messages are read more than generic ones. But every SMS and email can be seen by others — on a lock screen, a shared phone or a forwarded thread.
Personalise with care
Use first names, appointment times, order numbers and amounts due. Avoid diagnoses, full account numbers, balances on shared numbers and other sensitive details.
Check the data
Wrong names or stale details damage trust more than no personalisation. Validate data before sending.
Segment by relevance
Send different messages to different groups based on what they need — a renewal reminder to customers near renewal, not to everyone.
Respect consent
Use data only for the purposes people agreed to, in line with the Data Protection Act, 2019.
Test with real records
Preview messages with real data before sending to catch empty fields and formatting problems.
