Router security for homes and small offices
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Change defaults, update firmware, use strong Wi-Fi security and separate guests — simple steps that block common attacks.
The router is the front door between your devices and the internet. Many are left exactly as installed, which makes them an easy target.
Change the administrator password
Default passwords are widely known. Set a strong, unique administrator password.
Use strong Wi-Fi security
Choose WPA2 or WPA3 with a long passphrase. Avoid older, weaker settings.
Update the firmware
Router firmware updates fix security problems. Enable automatic updates where available, or check periodically.
Create a guest network
Visitors and smart devices go on a separate network that cannot see your computers.
Turn off what you do not use
Disable remote administration from the internet, WPS and unused port forwarding.
Replace old routers
Routers that no longer receive updates should be replaced.
Know who is connected
Check the router's list of connected devices occasionally and investigate anything unfamiliar.
