Smart home devices on your network
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Cameras, TVs, speakers and smart plugs add convenience and risk. Separate them, update them and choose reputable brands.
Smart TVs, security cameras, voice assistants, doorbells and smart plugs make homes more convenient. Each is also a small computer connected to your network.
Choose reputable brands
Prefer manufacturers with a track record of providing security updates for several years.
Put devices on a separate network
Use a guest or IoT network so a compromised device cannot reach your laptops and phones.
Secure the accounts
Smart devices are controlled through cloud accounts. Use strong, unique passwords and turn on two-factor authentication.
Change defaults
Change default device passwords and disable features you do not use.
Keep them updated
Enable automatic updates and replace devices that no longer receive them.
Think about privacy
Cameras and microphones collect sensitive information. Check privacy settings and where recordings are stored.
Plan Wi-Fi capacity
Many devices on one router can affect performance; good coverage helps.
