Technology priorities for private hospitals
By David Otieno, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Reliable systems, resilient networks and power, strong data protection and responsive support underpin safe, efficient care.
Hospitals depend on technology in every department, from registration and laboratories to pharmacy and billing. Their priorities differ from a typical office because downtime affects patient care.
Availability first
Clinical and administrative systems must keep running. That means redundant network links between critical areas, UPS and generator integration for servers and key workstations, and tested recovery plans for every important system.
Protect patient data
Patient records are sensitive personal data under the Data Protection Act, 2019. Role-based access, audit trails, encryption and secure backups are essential, along with clear procedures for sharing information.
Segment the network
Separate clinical devices, staff computers, guest Wi-Fi and building systems such as CCTV and access control, so a problem in one area cannot spread.
Support that matches the clock
Problems at night or on weekends still affect patients. Agree response targets and on-call arrangements that reflect clinical needs.
Plan for growth
New services, imaging equipment and digital records add load to networks, power and storage. Review capacity annually.
Train and involve staff
Clinicians adopt systems that fit their workflow. Involve them in design and train by role.
