Understanding internet plan terms: speed, contention and fair use
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Advertised speeds, sharing and usage policies shape real-world performance. Ask the right questions before signing.
Internet plans are often compared by a single number, but several terms in the small print decide what you actually experience.
Speed
Advertised speeds are usually maximums. Ask what speeds are typical at busy times of day, when many customers are online.
Download and upload
Download matters for browsing and streaming; upload matters for video calls, sending files, cloud backups and hosting. Some plans have much lower upload speeds.
Shared capacity
Most residential and many business services share network capacity between customers. Business-grade services may offer more capacity reserved for you, at a higher price.
Usage policies
Check whether there are usage limits or reduced speeds after a certain amount of data, and what counts towards them.
Installation and equipment
Who supplies and maintains the router? Is installation included?
Support
How are faults reported, during what hours, and how quickly are they resolved? For businesses, ask about service levels.
Contract terms
Minimum contract length and what happens if service is poor.
