USSD, SMS or an app: choosing a channel
By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read
Match the channel to your users' phones, connectivity and the interaction — one-way alerts, short menus or rich self-service.
Reaching customers on their phones does not always mean building an app. The right channel depends on who your users are and what they need to do.
SMS
Works on every phone without data. Best for one-way messages: alerts, reminders, receipts and codes. Two-way SMS can handle simple replies.
USSD
Session-based menus that work on any phone without data. Good for short, structured interactions such as balance checks or simple requests. Sessions are short, so flows must be brief.
Mobile apps
Rich interfaces, offline storage and notifications — but users must have a smartphone, download the app and keep it updated.
Web apps
Reach smartphone users without an app store. Good for occasional use.
Often, combine them
Use SMS for alerts with a link to a web page, USSD for basic self-service, and an app for frequent users.
