What to check during an internet installation
By Inara Crest Engineering 1 min read
Router placement, cable routes, tests, security settings and paperwork — a checklist for when the installer visits.
A careful installation avoids months of frustration. Use this checklist when your internet is installed.
1. Agree the router location
Choose a central, open position near where most devices are used — not in a cupboard or at the far end of the building.
2. Check the cable route
Cables should be neat, protected and clear of doors, windows and foot traffic.
3. Test on a cable
Ask the installer to run a speed test with a computer connected by cable.
4. Test Wi-Fi where it matters
Check signal and speed in the rooms you use most. Discuss additional access points if coverage is weak.
5. Secure the router
Change the default Wi-Fi name, Wi-Fi password and administrator password before the installer leaves.
6. Collect the details
Account number, plan details, support contacts, router model and administrator access.
7. Plan for outages
Consider a small UPS for the router and fibre terminal.
