AI video analytics: fewer false alarms, faster reviews
By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read
AI analytics turn CCTV from a recording system into an alerting system — detecting people and vehicles, not moving shadows.
Traditional motion detection triggers on anything that changes in the picture: swaying trees, headlights, rain. Operators learn to ignore the alerts. AI video analytics classify what is moving, which changes what CCTV can do.
What AI analytics can do
- **Person and vehicle detection:** alert only when a person or vehicle enters an area.
- **Line crossing and intrusion zones:** alert when someone crosses a fence line after hours.
- **Loitering:** flag someone remaining in a sensitive area.
- **Number-plate recognition:** record vehicles entering and leaving sites.
- **Search:** find footage of "a person in a red jacket" or "a white truck" instead of scrolling through hours.
Where the analytics run
Analytics can run on the camera, on the recorder or on a server. Camera-based analytics reduce bandwidth; server-based analytics allow more complex processing across many cameras.
Set it up properly
Camera position and lighting matter even more for analytics. Tune detection zones and schedules, and review alerts for the first weeks to remove sources of false positives.
Privacy
Analytics process personal data. Define the purpose, limit access, set retention periods and display signage, in line with the Data Protection Act, 2019.
