Diagnosing slow networks: a methodical approach
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Narrow down whether the problem is the device, Wi-Fi, local network, internet or the application before changing anything.
"The network is slow" can mean many things. A methodical approach finds the cause faster than guesswork.
Define the problem
Who is affected, which applications, since when, and at what times?
Isolate layer by layer
- **Device:** does another device in the same place work better?
- **Wi-Fi:** is it better on a cable?
- **Local network:** are internal systems slow too?
- **Internet:** is the internet link saturated or degraded?
- **Application:** is one service slow while others are fine?
Look at data
Switch and firewall statistics, Wi-Fi utilisation and internet usage graphs show where congestion occurs.
Common causes
Overloaded Wi-Fi, a failing cable or port, a device saturating the internet link, or an application problem.
Fix and verify
Change one thing at a time and confirm the result with users.
