Edge data centres for branches and remote sites
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Self-contained racks with cooling, power and monitoring bring reliable computing to branches, plants and roadside sites.
Some systems need to run close to where data is created: cameras at a weighbridge, sensors in a plant, systems in a branch.
What an edge site includes
An enclosed rack with integrated cooling, UPS, power distribution, environmental monitoring and secure access.
Why process locally
Local processing reduces bandwidth, keeps working when the WAN fails and gives fast response for real-time systems.
Remote management
Edge sites rarely have IT staff. Remote monitoring, management and out-of-band access are essential.
Standardise
Use a standard design for all edge sites to simplify support and spares.
Physical protection
Edge racks often sit in shared or exposed spaces. Use lockable enclosures, door sensors and cameras, and choose units rated for dust and heat where needed. Plan how engineers will reach the site for maintenance.
