Hardening a new Windows workstation
By Inara Crest Engineering 1 min read
A checklist to make a new computer secure before it reaches the user — updates, encryption, accounts and protection.
A consistent, secure setup for every computer prevents many incidents.
1. Update
Install all operating system and application updates before handover.
2. Encrypt
Enable full-disk encryption and store recovery keys securely.
3. Use standard accounts
Users work without administrator rights; administrator accounts are separate.
4. Protect
Install and verify endpoint protection and enable the firewall.
5. Remove what is not needed
Uninstall unnecessary software and disable unused features.
6. Configure backups and management
Enrol the device in management and backup systems.
7. Record
Add the device to the asset register with its user.
