Inverters vs UPS: what's the difference?

By David Otieno, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read

Both provide battery power during outages. They differ in transfer time, power conditioning and intended loads.

Inverters and UPS units both run equipment from batteries when the power goes off. They are designed for different purposes.

UPS

Designed to protect sensitive electronics. Switching time is very short or zero (online UPS), and many condition power continuously. Runtime is often short, unless extended with batteries.

Inverters

Designed for longer backup of household or office loads, often with larger battery banks and sometimes solar input. Transfer may take longer, which some sensitive devices notice.

Using them together

Some sites use an inverter for general loads and UPS units for servers and network equipment.

Choose by load
