Labelling standard for a small office network
By Inara Crest Engineering 1 min read
A simple, consistent labelling scheme for outlets, patch panels, cables and devices that anyone can follow.
Good labels save hours during every fault and change. A scheme only needs to be simple and applied consistently.
1. Outlets
Label each outlet with floor, room and number, for example F1-R04-02. Use the same identifier at the patch panel.
2. Patch panels
Number panels within each rack (A, B, C) and ports sequentially.
3. Patch cords
Use colour to indicate function — for example blue for data, yellow for cameras, red for uplinks — and label both ends for critical links.
4. Devices
Label switches, routers and access points with their hostname, which matches the network documentation.
5. Records
Keep an outlet schedule mapping outlets, panel ports, switch ports and connected devices.
