Managing technology projects in occupied buildings
By Kennedy Ougo, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Hospitals, hotels and offices must keep running during installations. Plan work around operations, safety, noise and access.
Most technology installations happen in buildings that are still in use: wards with patients, hotel floors with guests, offices with staff working.
Schedule around operations
Agree work windows with each department — nights, weekends or quiet periods — and phase the work area by area.
Protect occupants
Use barriers, signage and dust control. In clinical areas, follow infection control procedures for ceiling and wall work.
Coordinate access
Arrange access to rooms in advance, with escorts where required, and respect privacy in guest and patient areas.
Minimise downtime
Plan cut-overs carefully, prepare and test in advance, and have rollback steps ready.
Control noise
Schedule drilling and other noisy tasks for agreed times.
Communicate daily
A short daily update to building managers prevents surprises and complaints.
