Perimeter security for industrial sites
By David Otieno, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Layered fencing, detection, lighting, cameras and response procedures protect large sites more effectively than any single measure.
Industrial and logistics sites have long perimeters, valuable materials and often remote locations.
Layer the defences
- **Deter:** visible fencing, lighting and signage.
- **Detect:** electric fence alarms, intrusion sensors and analytics on cameras.
- **Verify:** cameras covering alarm zones.
- **Respond:** guards or response teams with clear procedures.
Zone the perimeter
Divide the perimeter into zones so alarms show exactly where to look.
Light for cameras
Infrared or white light so cameras can see at night.
Maintain
Clear vegetation from fences, test alarms and check cameras regularly.
Integrate the systems
Link fence alarms, intrusion sensors and cameras so an alarm automatically brings up the right camera view for the guard or monitoring centre. Record every alarm, its cause and the response, and review false alarms to tune the system.
