Power density planning per rack

By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read

How much power each rack draws determines cooling, circuits and PDUs. Plan density deliberately rather than discovering it.

Every watt a rack draws becomes heat that must be removed. Power density drives the whole design.

Measure or estimate the load

Use measured consumption where possible; nameplate ratings overstate typical draw.

Plan circuits and PDUs

Each rack needs circuits and PDUs that support its load with headroom, ideally fed from two independent sources.

Match cooling

Higher-density racks need more targeted cooling, such as in-row units or containment.

Spread the load

Distribute high-power equipment across racks rather than concentrating it where cooling cannot keep up.

Monitor

Metered PDUs show actual consumption per rack and reveal when limits approach.

Plan for the future

New servers and storage often draw more power per rack unit than the equipment they replace. When planning a new room, design power and cooling for the density you expect in several years, not just today's load.
