Rack layout for a network cabinet
By Inara Crest Engineering 1 min read
A logical order for patch panels, switches, cable managers, power and UPS keeps a cabinet tidy, cool and serviceable.
A well-planned cabinet is easier to manage and keeps equipment cooler.
1. Plan before installing
Draw a rack elevation showing every unit.
2. Suggested order (top to bottom)
- Fibre and internet termination.
- Patch panels alternating with switches, separated by horizontal cable managers.
- Firewall and router.
- Servers or storage, if any.
- UPS at the bottom (heavy).
3. Use short patch cords
Correct lengths prevent tangles.
4. Manage airflow
Use blanking panels and keep vents clear.
5. Separate power and data
Route power cables on one side and data on the other.
