Securing IoT devices on the network
By David Otieno, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Cameras, sensors and smart devices are often the weakest devices on a network. Isolate, update and monitor them.
Connected devices — cameras, door controllers, sensors, smart TVs — are convenient and frequently insecure.
Change defaults
Change default passwords immediately and disable unused services.
Isolate
Put devices on their own network segment with access only to what they need.
Update
Apply firmware updates and replace devices that no longer receive them.
Limit internet access
Block internet access for devices that do not need it, and avoid exposing them through port forwarding.
Inventory
Know what is connected. Unknown devices are unmanaged risks.
Buy with security in mind
Before buying devices, check whether the manufacturer provides regular security updates, supports changing default credentials and documents what network access the device needs. Cheaper devices with no updates often cost more in the long run.
