Choosing a tech stack for a business application
By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read
Pick technologies your team can hire for, host and maintain for years — not the newest framework.
The technology behind a business application will outlive the project that built it. Choosing it is a long-term decision about people, hosting and maintenance.
Optimise for maintainability
Prefer mature, widely used languages and frameworks with long-term support releases. A system written in a niche tool becomes hard to staff when the original developers move on.
Match the hosting
Check where the system will run — shared hosting, a VPS, an on-premises server — and choose technologies that run well there. A cPanel environment, for example, supports Node.js and PHP applications well.
Choose a proven database
A relational database such as PostgreSQL suits most business systems: transactions, reporting and strong data integrity.
Keep it simple
Fewer moving parts mean fewer failures. Avoid microservices, message brokers and complex front-end tooling unless the problem clearly needs them.
Think about integration
Make sure the stack has solid libraries for the systems you must connect to — payments, messaging, identity, reporting.
