Handling permits and exemptions in load control software
By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read
Abnormal loads move legally under permit. Load control software must recognise valid permits so decisions are correct and consistent.
Some loads cannot be broken down — transformers, construction equipment, large machinery. They travel under special permits, and a load control system must treat them correctly.
Store permits as structured data
Each permit should record the vehicle, the permitted dimensions and masses, the route, the validity period and any conditions such as escort or travel times.
Check permits at weighing
When a vehicle is weighed, the software looks up valid permits for that registration and date, and compares the measurements with the permitted values instead of the standard limits.
Keep the decision explainable
Show the operator which permit was applied and why the vehicle passed or failed. Record it with the weighing.
Verify authenticity
Permits should be issued and checked in a system that prevents forgery — for example, verified against the issuing authority's records rather than paper alone.
Report
Track permit use by route and operator to help planners understand abnormal load movements.
