Choosing a weighbridge: capacity, platform and indicator
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Match the weighbridge to the heaviest vehicles, the site and how readings will be recorded, verified and integrated.
A weighbridge is a long-term investment that affects every transaction or load check made on it.
Capacity and length
Size the weighbridge for the heaviest and longest vehicles expected, with margin. A deck that is too short forces vehicles to be weighed in parts, which reduces accuracy and slows operations.
Platform type
Surface-mounted platforms with ramps are quicker to install; pit-mounted platforms sit level with the ground and save space. Drainage, soil conditions and traffic flow influence the choice.
Load cells
Load cells are the heart of the weighbridge. Choose types with good protection against moisture, dust and lightning, and a track record in similar conditions.
Indicator
The indicator displays the weight and sends it to software. Choose indicators that support reliable digital output and the verification requirements that apply to your use.
Foundations
Engineered foundations are essential for accuracy and longevity.
Software and integration
Plan from the start how readings will be captured, stored and linked to ANPR, ERP or load control systems.
Service and calibration
Make sure calibration, verification and maintenance support are available locally.
