Large language models in the enterprise: where they help
By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read
LLMs are strong at drafting, summarising, searching and classifying text. They need grounding, guardrails and human review.
Large language models (LLMs) can read and write text with impressive fluency. In organisations, their value lies in specific, well-designed uses.
Where they help
- Drafting emails, reports and proposals for staff to edit.
- Summarising long documents, meetings or support threads.
- Answering questions from internal documents.
- Classifying and routing incoming messages.
- Extracting fields from unstructured text.
Where to be careful
LLMs can produce confident but wrong answers. Do not rely on them for facts without sources, calculations, or decisions with legal or financial effect.
Ground answers in your data
Connect the model to your own documents so answers are based on them, and show the sources.
Protect information
Decide which data may be sent to a model, choose providers with suitable data-handling terms and control access.
Measure usefulness
Track time saved and error rates, and gather user feedback.
