Monitoring field data collection quality in real time

By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read

Daily checks on completeness, timing, location and consistency catch problems while teams are still in the field.

Problems found after fieldwork ends are expensive to fix. Monitoring data as it arrives lets supervisors correct issues the same day.

What to check

  • **Completeness:** missing answers and skipped sections.
  • **Timing:** interviews that are implausibly short.
  • **Location:** submissions outside the assigned area, where location is collected with consent.
  • **Consistency:** answers that contradict each other.
  • **Duplicates:** the same respondent recorded twice.

Build a monitoring dashboard

Show progress against targets and quality indicators by enumerator and area, updated daily.

Act quickly

Supervisors follow up with field teams on flagged submissions and arrange revisits where needed.

Give feedback

Share quality results with enumerators to improve their work.
