Offline-first mobile apps for field teams
By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read
Field staff often work without connectivity. Offline-first apps store work locally and sync safely when a connection returns.
Surveyors, inspectors, community health workers and technicians often work where mobile data is weak or absent. Apps that assume constant connectivity fail them.
Store first, sync later
The app saves every record on the device first, then synchronises with the server in the background when a connection is available.
Design for conflicts
Two people may edit the same record offline. Decide the rules in advance — last edit wins, merge fields, or ask a supervisor — and show users what happened.
Keep sync reliable
- Send records in small batches and retry on failure.
- Give each record a unique ID created on the device.
- Show users clearly what is still waiting to upload.
Protect the data
Encrypt data on the device, require sign-in, and allow remote wiping if a device is lost.
Plan for devices
Test on the actual phones field staff use, with their storage limits and battery life.
