Connecting weighbridge stations to a central system
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Central visibility needs resilient links, local storage when links fail and secure synchronisation of records.
A network of weighing stations is most useful when headquarters can see every station in near real time. That depends on connectivity designed for remote sites.
Choose the right links
Use fibre where available; otherwise cellular or point-to-point wireless. Where possible, add a second link from a different provider for resilience.
Store locally, sync centrally
Stations must keep working when the link drops. Store records and images locally and synchronise them when the connection returns, without duplicates.
Prioritise traffic
Records and alerts should travel before bulky image transfers. Send images in the background or at quieter times if bandwidth is limited.
Secure the connection
Use an encrypted VPN between stations and the central system, unique credentials per station and firewall rules that allow only the necessary traffic.
Monitor every station
A central view should show link status, last record received and equipment health for each station, with alerts when a station goes quiet.
