Integrating weighbridges with ANPR cameras

By Micah Ondiwa, Senior Software Engineer 1 min read

Automatic number-plate recognition removes typing at the weighbridge and ties every weight to a vehicle, image and time.

At many weighbridges the operator still types the registration number. It is slow, and a single wrong character breaks the link between a vehicle and its weighing history.

How the integration works

  1. A camera at the approach reads the number plate as the vehicle arrives.
  2. The weighbridge software opens a weighing session for that registration.
  3. When the reading is stable, the weight is captured from the indicator.
  4. Plate images and the weight are stored together in one record.

Handle uncertain reads

ANPR returns a confidence score. Low-confidence reads should be confirmed by the operator against the image rather than silently accepted.

Use the history

With reliable plates, the software can show a vehicle's previous weighings, flag repeat overloading and pre-fill transporter details.

Design the site for the camera

Plate cameras need the right height, angle and lighting, including infrared for night operation. Position them where vehicles move slowly and in a straight line.

Watch privacy

Registration data is personal data. Restrict access and set retention periods.
