Solar power for remote roadside equipment
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Where grid power is unavailable or unreliable, solar with battery storage can run cameras, sensors and communications — if sized properly.
Many monitoring sites are far from reliable grid power. Solar with batteries can power them, provided the system is designed for the worst conditions, not the average day.
Start with the load
List every device and its power consumption over 24 hours: cameras, infrared illuminators at night, processors, radios and routers.
Size for autonomy
Batteries must carry the site through several consecutive cloudy days. Panels must recharge the batteries while also running the load.
Choose components for the environment
Use batteries suited to outdoor temperatures, charge controllers with monitoring, and enclosures that stay ventilated and secure.
Reduce consumption
Low-power equipment, scheduled illumination and efficient communications reduce the size — and cost — of the solar system.
Monitor remotely
Report battery voltage and charge status so problems are seen before the site goes dark.
Deter theft
Mount panels high, use secure fixings and include the site in your security monitoring.
