Speed monitoring near schools and towns
By Vicky Ogola, Senior ICT Consultant 1 min read
Where pedestrians and traffic meet, speed matters most. Monitoring helps target engineering, education and enforcement where they are needed.
Highways often pass through towns, markets and school zones. Vehicles travelling at highway speed where people walk and cross is a serious safety risk.
Start with measurement
Measure actual speeds before deciding on measures. Speed data by time of day shows when the problem is worst — school arrival and departure, market days, nights.
Combine measures
- **Engineering:** crossings, speed humps, narrowing, lighting.
- **Information:** signs that show drivers their speed.
- **Enforcement:** cameras or patrols where speeding persists.
Use monitoring to evaluate
Measure again after changes to see whether speeds fell. Evidence helps justify further investment.
Involve the community
Schools, local leaders and businesses know where people cross and when. Their input improves site selection.
